Plitvice Lakes, Croatia: Worth It, If You Do It Differently
Croatia has its highlights: and Plitvice Lakes National Park is definitely one of them. It is well-known, heavily photographed, and often described the same way: waterfalls and beautiful turquoise water.
All true.
But also incomplete.
What it feels like
At first, it can feel crowded, with a very structured flow to how you move through it. The wooden walkways guide you through very specific paths, groups and tourists moving in the same direction, everyone stopping at the same viewpoints.
It’s easy to feel like you’re just following a set route rather than finding your own way through it - but this really just comes down to how you approach it.
What makes it different
It takes some convincing to wake up early, but if you’ve already slept in the area the night before, it feels much more manageable. There’s less driving involved, and the whole start to the day is calmer.
We arrived at Entrance 2, where there’s a nearby parking lot. Since it’s not the main one, it doesn’t fill up as quickly. That said, book your tickets in advance. Even with tickets, we still waited around 30 minutes to get in.
Once inside the park, we took the H trail, starting early and moving against the usual flow. This meant that instead of heading straight to the main viewpoints, we left them for later, and that changed everything.
Take the shuttle bus up to Station 3, then start walking down towards the electric boat docking area P2. This is where you really notice you’re going against the flow. Most people are just starting to make their way up towards the upper lakes, while you’re already moving through it.

The first part of the walk feels quieter, with more space around you. There’s less stopping, less waiting. You’re still on the same paths, but the experience feels completely different.
From there, take the boat across Kozjak Lake. By this point, it’s usually getting close to lunchtime and this is where your planning ahead becomes essential.
At docking area P3, there’s a restaurant and seating area. Around midday, it starts to fill up, and a lot of people stop here to eat and take in the view. It’s a nice spot, and worth a short pause—but this is also the moment to keep moving if you want to stay ahead of the crowds.

Continue through the Lower Lakes canyon and follow the path all the way to the Great Waterfall.

We reached it around 3 pm, then took our time walking back towards Entrance 2 to pick up the car. Ending the day like this felt much more relaxed—and less like something we had to rush through.
How to approach it
A few things made a real difference:
- Start early
We stayed nearby the night before and entered the park in the morning. It takes a bit of effort to get up early, but it avoids both parking issues and that first wave of crowds that builds up quickly. - Choose your route intentionally
The H trail worked well because it spreads the experience out and avoids the immediate congestion, instead you ease into it and move through the park more naturally. - Bring snacks (and take everything back with you)
There are restaurants later on, after crossing the lake, but having something with you gives you more flexibility. We usually pack lunch for days like this so we can keep moving without having to stop in crowded food areas. Just make sure to take your trash with you: either use the bins in the park or bring it back with you. - Don’t rush
It’s easy to fall into the mindset of trying to see everything, but the experience depends more on how you move through it than how much you cover.
What to expect / not expect
Plitvice is not a hidden place.
You will see:
- other people
- structured paths
- defined routes
If you’re expecting complete isolation, this isn’t it.
But if you approach it well, you can still find:
- quieter moments
- space to move
- a more balanced experience
Who it’s for
This works if you’re willing to adjust your approach.
If you:
- start early
- avoid peak flow
- don’t expect total solitude
then it’s worth it.
If you’re looking for something untouched or completely quiet, it might feel overwhelming.
How we planned it
We used Plitvice as the first stop of our road trip, which made the timing easier to manage.
We stayed nearby the night before, entered the park early in the morning, spent the day walking through it, and then went back to our hotel. The next day, we picked up the car again and continued the trip.
Doing it this way felt much more relaxed. It gave us the time to go through the park properly, without feeling like we had to rush in and out in the same day.

Final thought
Plitvice isn’t underrated, and it doesn’t need to be.
But it’s also not just about what you see. The experience depends a lot on how you move through it.
If you plan it well and avoid the main flow, it works. If you don’t, it can feel very different.
